Trigeminal neuralgia acupuncture — Scottsdale & Phoenix, AZ

Facial nerve pain that hasn't fully responded to medication or treatment

Trigeminal neuralgia and facial nerve pain are among the most difficult pain conditions to live with — and among the conditions conventional medicine has the fewest long-term answers for. We work with patients who are already under medical care and looking for something that addresses what medication alone hasn't resolved.

WHO WE SEE

Most patients come to us after they've already been evaluated — imaging done, diagnosis established, medications tried. They're not looking to replace their neurologist. They're looking for something that helps with what's still there.

— Medications are helping partially but pain breaks through

— Side effects from carbamazepine or other medications are affecting quality of life

— Pain persists after dental causes have been ruled out

— Surgical intervention isn't indicated or isn't something you're ready for

— Pain is affecting eating, speaking, or sleep

— You have atypical facial pain without a clear structural explanation

CONDITIONS WE SEE MOST

Trigeminal neuralgia

Classic and atypical presentations, including mild to moderate cases not yet at the surgical threshold

Atypical facial pain

Persistent facial pain without a clear structural cause — often after extensive workup

Post-dental nerve pain

Nerve irritation following dental procedures, extractions, or implants that hasn't fully resolved

Facial nerve hypersensitivity

Heightened sensitivity, burning, or buzzing along facial nerve pathways

HOW ACUPUNCTURE APPROACHES FACIAL NERVE PAIN

Facial nerve pain often involves sensitized nerve pathways that continue firing even when the original trigger has resolved or been treated. Acupuncture works directly along those pathways — calming nerve hypersensitivity, improving local circulation, and addressing the muscular tension that frequently develops around a chronic pain site.

Treatment is conservative, carefully targeted, and adjusted based on your specific response. We don't alter or advise on your medical management — we work alongside it.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I need to stop my medication to try acupuncture? No. Acupuncture works alongside your current medications. We don't recommend changing your medical management — that's between you and your neurologist.

Is this appropriate if surgery hasn't been recommended yet? Yes. Many patients pursue acupuncture while medications are still being adjusted, or when surgery isn't indicated. It's a conservative option that doesn't close any other doors.

What if my diagnosis is uncertain or atypical? That's actually a common situation. Many patients with facial nerve pain have incomplete or atypical presentations. We'll discuss your history honestly and tell you whether we think acupuncture is likely to help.

How many visits does it typically take to see results? Nerve pain conditions generally respond more gradually than musculoskeletal pain. Most patients notice some change within 4–6 visits, though complex or longstanding cases may take longer.
